Show Notes

In this episode, I address some of the most common and perplexing social etiquette questions from my listeners. Here are the questions and my answers:

How do I politely ask someone to let me finish speaking without causing friction?

The key is tone of voice. Try a gentle but firm approach, such as “Oh, let me just finish this thought quickly,” or “I’d love to hear your point—just a moment while I finish mine.” This keeps the conversation flowing without conflict.

Question: Should I continue inviting guests who never reciprocate?

It depends on your intent. If you truly enjoy hosting and expect nothing in return, continue as you wish. But if you feel unappreciated, it’s perfectly fine to step back. You can also subtly encourage reciprocation by saying, “Next time, I’d love to come to yours!”

Question: How can I graciously decline an invitation without making excuses?

Keep it simple and appreciative. Say, “Thank you so much for thinking of me! I won’t be able to make it this time, but I hope it’s a wonderful gathering.” No need for elaborate reasons.

Question: How do I handle a friend who never lets me get a word in?

Try a lighthearted approach, such as, “I love hearing your stories—let me jump in quickly before I forget what I was going to say!” If the issue persists, consider addressing it privately with kindness.

Question: Is it rude to correct someone’s table manners?

Generally, yes—unless they specifically ask for guidance. If it’s a close friend or family member, you might gently offer a tip in private. Otherwise, lead by example.

Question:  I have a close friend who is always late, whether it’s for dinner, coffee or an event. How can I address this without sounding like I’m scolding them?

This can be so annoying, can’t it?  Once again, a gentle tone of voice can make the conversation easier.   If it is not a cultural difference with regard to the importance of punctuality, saying “I so enjoy our catchup coffees, and I know that it’s not always easy for your to escape the office, but we all have time constraints so I really appreciate it when you arrive at our agreed time.”
